You’ll see in the calendar that there’s a day marked in blue, named “chobok” in Korean. Although chobok isn’t a holiday in Korea and is probably close to being forgotten, here is the significance of the day:
July 20th, Chobok: Chobok is the day that marks the start of a hot summer in South Korea. There are a total of three “bok” days- Chobok, Joongbok, and finally Malbok. The three days are collectively called bok-nal, or “bok” days. The bok days are determined not by the Gregorian calendar, not the lunar calendar, but a complicated 24 solar term, so the dates vary each year! Traditionally, there are various dishes eaten during on bok days to nourish and hydrate the body during the hot seasons. The most typical dish is SamGyeTang.
now, eating hot things on a hot day is one way to beat the heat (traditionally), and the samgyetang recipe can be found through the cafemaddy physical calendar.
But another way I personally love to survive the summer is by slurping some really spicy noodles under the blasting AC. So here’s the recipe (makes 2 servings):
I love this easy recipe so much that I made it into a Tshirt, so that you can simply look at your shirt to whip this up whenever you want =) if you already got this tee, there are more recipe tees coming soon, so stay tuned!
